Shared ownership

What is shared ownership?

Shared ownership is where a community group invests in a commercially owned renewable energy project.

The Scottish Government has set out an ambition for at least half of newly consented renewable energy projects to have an element of shared ownership by 2020.

What are the benefits of Shared Ownership?

  • Communities can share in the wealth generated by the renewable resource in their area, creating a sustainable income stream of which they have control
  • Developers can increase community engagement, access incentives such as rates relief and possibly add value to their planning application.

How we can help

We support communities interested in Shared Ownership of a renewable project.

We have created several resources for communities considering Shared Ownership opportunities:

Other support includes:

Shared Ownership in Scotland’s national forests

Since 2010 Forestry and Land Scotland has made Community Benefit and a Shared Ownership offer mandatory on most renewable energy sites on the National Forest Estate.

Support is also available to those interested in developing a project on the National Forest Estate through CARES from your Local Development Officer.
