Building on a previous IIF project (procurement of four Nissan Leafs), this project sought to explore an alternative electric/low carbon replacement vessel for an out-of-hours ferry service between Shapinsay and the Orkney mainland. The awarded IIF grant has been used to conduct a feasibilityoptions and design study, in order to identify a suitable vessel for this proposal.
In 2011 the Shapinsay Development Trust developed and commissioned a 900kW community owned wind turbine. However, in common with a number of other community generators in Orkney, following commissioning of the turbine with an Active Network Managed non-firm connection, it become apparent to the Trust that the operational levels of curtailed downtime were very significant, in the order of a third of all potential unrestricted production. In order to secure the long-term viability of the turbine, and to maximise the community benefit and value that the turbine can create, the Trust sought to develop any mitigating methods that could effectively reduce grid congestion, increase production and maximize local use of this energy. An idea was brokered to research the possibility of using electric/low carbon vessels for the Out of Hours passenger ferry service to and from the Orkney Mainland. It was anticipated that if it were possible to fuel this vessel either directly or indirectly from otherwise curtailed production from the turbine this would have significant benefits in two ways: first through providing low cost fuel to reduce running costs for a marine transport solution; and secondly, creating increased revenue and local use of the locally generated renewable electricity produced by the community’s turbine.
